Education

Nova Scotia Community College

After discovering that I was far more interested in the networking and systems administration aspects of computer science, I researched the IT program at NSCC.
Previous graduates spoke of the hands-on elements and the practical application of the skills they learned there.
The concentration in systems and networking administration appears to be exactly what I want out of this stage of my education.

Dalhousie University

I returned to university to pursue a computer science degree after hearing highly favourable statements about the job market for those with technical backgrounds.
The first two years of the program showed me the true breadth of the subject material available and was a very valuable experience.

University of Maine - Presque Isle

An excellent program and a great environment, UMPI was a fantastic place to earn a teaching degree.

St. Lawrence College

A year long program with an emphasis on technology in the workplace.

Experience

Dalhousie University

Easily the best student job on campus - coincidentally, there was an opening as I started investigating returning to university and I was remembered favourably enough that I was hired back into the position.
In this role, I:
  • Oversee nightly operations of the Student Union Building;
  • Supervise part-time employees;
  • Liaise with internal and external departments to ensure smooth operations;
  • Manage a cash vault and reconcile floats daily;
  • Enforce Student Union policies and procedures, and;
  • Determine immediate solutions for last-minute challenges.

Halifax Regional School Board

I enjoyed my time in the classroom enormously and still substitute when I have time available to do so.
In this role, I:
  • Maintain thorough and regular records for students;
  • Align teaching practices with curriculum standards;
  • Design daily, weekly and monthly lesson plans;
  • Strengthen and support students in their areas of weakness;
  • Pattern my behaviour to model life-long learning, and;
  • Earn the respect of my students by being open and candid.

Office Administrator

The John Howard Society is an organization that is involved with people who are interacting in some way with the Canadian criminal justice system.
In this role, I:
  • Assisted the executive director with technology purchases and upgrades;
  • Drafted documents for release regarding areas of interest for our society;
  • Coordinated volunteers for internal programs;
  • Researched and communicated information to inmates of correctional facilities;
  • Established a rapport with an incredibly diverse client base, and;
  • Improved the performance of office technology through regular maintenance.

Night Manager

The position has not changed a great deal since I first worked for the Dalhousie Student Union.

Skills

Technology

I am highly proficient in many different technologies. For example:

  • The entire office suite of products, including Microsoft Access and Excel
  • The GNU Image Manipulation Program
  • Prezi (presentation software)
  • Windows operating systems
  • Social media platforms
  • Intermediate HTML5 & CSS3 skills
  • Computer assembly and troubleshooting
  • Emergent skills with the Python programming language
  • Working knowledge of command line interfaces (Grep, PS, Prompt)
  • Command line switch management
  • SOHO level networking and network troubleshooting

Writing & Editing

I am a skilled writer and editor, and strive for perfection in the written word. I have a diverse vocabulary and bring clarity to my communication.
I have also published poetry in two university journals, namely Upcountry and Fathom.

Teaching

My colleagues have, at one time or another, praised my dedication and commitment to my students and to my profession. I have just over one hundred anonymous student evaluations, all of which rate my performance highly. The references I have obtained from my administrators have been absolutely glowing.

I strive for equity and fairness, and encourage introspection and critical thinking in all my students. The decision for me to return to school was a very difficult one, considering the reduction in teaching it required. I hope that I will return to teaching with some frequency after I have finished my program.
